Durham alumnus becomes new BBC Director General
George Entwistle (Philosophy & Politics, University College, 1980-83) has been announced as the new Director General of the BBC. Currently the controller of BBC Vision, overseeing all of the corporation's TV channels and programme-making departments, he will begin his new role on 17th September 2012. George joined the BBC as a news trainee 23 years ago, going on to edit Newsnight before being promoted to several senior roles, including Acting Controller of BBC4. He will now be challenged with improving the BBC’s programming at a time when the licence fee has been frozen while also implementing a cost-cutting strategy. We wish George the very best in his new role. A profile is available at bbc.co.uk.
