Lindisfarne Gospels Durham
With the opening of Lindisfarne Gospels Durham drawing near, work has commenced on the fit out of the exhibition galleries and the relocated shop in Palace Green Library.  The Learning Team are continuing to deliver very well received outreach sessions in schools across the region and are developing heritage trails and learning activities for visitors to follow.  Ticket sales are going well and the accompanying events programme is live on the website.

Durham alumni are invited to an exclusive drinks and canapé reception in the spectacular setting of the India Office Council Chamber - one of the finest state rooms of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office - on Wednesday 29th May. This event is proving popular with only a few tickets remaining. Robert Gillespie (Economics, Grey College, 1974-77), Chair of University Council, will be giving a short talk on takeovers and mergers. Sir Thomas Allen in Concert at Durham Cathedral
Durham University’s Chancellor and renowned opera singer Sir Thomas Allen will join more than 100 student musicians for a concert in Durham Cathedral on 1st June 2013. Sir Thomas will perform alongside Durham University’s Chamber Choir, one of the leading choirs in the north of England, and the University’s Symphony Orchestra.

Durham Story Premiere - save the date
Released this June, a new film telling the story of the birth, growth and character of Durham University through the antics and adventures of students across the last 180 years. Featuring contributions from Jeremy Vine, Bill Bryson and Sir Thomas Allen, the 'Durham Story' sheds new light on the origins of our University. You can view the trailer here. 'The Durham Story' Premiere will take place in the Great Hall, University College, on 7th June 2013, with a drinks reception, a display of the artwork used in the film and period detail provided by Durham Student Theatre. Durham graduate Jules Hudson to Launch Festival
Dalescape, the Durham Dales first ever walking festival will be launched by Durham University graduate and television personality, Jules Hudson (MSc, Archaeology, University College, 1994-95). The ‘Escape to the Country’ and ‘Countryfile’ presenter will be in Teesdale on Saturday June 8th to officially open the festival at a special dinner at the Morritt Hotel at Greta Bridge. The College Chapel Choir for St Hild and St Bede have been granted the privilege again this year to sing at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. They will be doing so on Monday 10th June and Tuesday 11th June at 5.00pm. We would be delighted to see any Durham alumni at the service, and particularly those from St Hild and St Bede. The choir is an auditioned choir under the Director of Music, Hugo Hymas who is a second year undergraduate.  He is assisted by Nicholas Hoggard, a postgraduate at the College. Further details about the choir can be found here. The Choir have recently recorded a CD of Christmas Music which will be released in the autumn. The Secret Garden - Butler STAB performs at the Assembly Rooms. The show details the story of Mary Lennox, an 11-year-old English girl living in India who, after her parents pass away, is sent back to Yorkshire to live with her Uncle. She finds his home at first forbidding and unfriendly, but through her friendship with her Uncles son, Colin, and her discovery of a mysterious locked garden in the grounds of the house she begins to come to terms with her life and sees the people around her in a new light.

Cuth's Day this year is Saturday June 15th, the end of our annual Arts Week which also includes the Big Sing of 125 voices on June 11th, a lecture by Michael Lewis of the British Museum on June 13th, and the annual SCR/JCR cricket match on June 8th. The annual Alumni Association weekend will be September 6th-8th, and will include a talk on the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition, and a limited number of tickets. We hope to see many alumni back in this 125th anniversary year (which began, appropriately, on March 20th, St Cuthbert's Day). Visit St John’s and see the Lindisfarne Gospels. Durham University’s Palace Green Library has been redesigned and refurbished to accommodate the Lindisfarne Gospels from 1st July–30th September. The Gospels are among Britain’s most significant mediaeval manuscripts, and one of the best examples of creativity and craftsmanship from Medieval times. St John’s College is offering alumni and friends the chance to spend a weekend in college, enjoy a lecture linked to the Gospels and visit the Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition on the weekend of September 6th, 7th and 8th 2013.
