Lumiere, Durham – International City of Light, 17 – 20 November

Something extraordinary is happening in Durham this November as Lumiere – the event that brought 75,000 people to the streets of Durham in 2009 - returns to the city with a second festival that will be bigger and brighter than before. For four nights only, Lumiere will transform the historic city, illuminating its buildings, streets and bridges, with a nocturnal winter festival that will amaze residents and visitors alike. (Click through for more information and further dates for Autumn)

The finishing touches are being added to the programme which will be announced at the beginning of October, but plan to present lightworks by more than 35 artists, lighting designers and community groups, creating a breathtaking series of installations and projections. One thing is certain: the entire city will be transformed by artists using every form of light, from the brightest neon and LEDs to huge projections and magical installations using fire and flame.

Why not make a date for a winter break to Durham and come and join us at Lumiere? Wrap up warm, and prepare to be dazzled!

A new website for the festival will be launched early next month. The site will be packed full of useful information about getting the most out of the festival and your visit to Durham complete with maps, refreshment deals, and, when the programme is announced in the autumn, information about the installations and artists. To sign up to the mailing list please see www.lumieredurham.co.uk.

Lots of local restaurants, cafes, and accommodation providers and other businesses are getting behind the festival offering Lumiere audiences some great discounts and deals. If you are planning to stay in Durham we have some great Lumiere deals on accommodation to share with you. For more information please email Event Durham at event@durham.ac.uk.

The festival has been commissioned by Durham County Council and funded by Arts Council England, the European Commission, and NewcastleGateshead Initiative and a raft of sponsors including Thorn, Radisson Blu, East Coast, Recognition PR and Latimer Hinks Solicitors.

The event producers, Artichoke, are extremely concerned to make the event as energy-efficient as possible, and continue to work to reduce the environmental impact of the event further.   For example, all the generators used in the 2009 event used biofuels, and the majority of the installations used low-energy LEDs rather than the old-fashioned energy-hungry floodlights that normally would have been switched on at the time. Artichoke intend the event to be a showcase for what can be achieved using low-energy lighting, rather than more conventional forms.
