Issue: March 2007
Welcome

by Roland

I met an old friend the other day when I was coming out of the cinema after seeing the film Kanyini about Aboroginal people from Uluru in the centre of Australia.

“You know,” he said “I really look forward to the newsletter you send out each month.”

“Really?” I asked, genuinely surprised to be getting this unsolicited feedback from a friend.

“Yes, really.  It’s one of the most inspiring  pieces of email I receive. I love it!”

This set me thinking.  How can we make this newsletter even better?  And I’ve come up with an idea.  We would like more of you to be writing about stories and experiences connected with the 5 Rhythms and the work of Susannah and Ya’Acov.  So from next month we will be offering a prize of £100 workshop voucher for the best article submitted.  Yours truely, the editor, will be the final arbiter and I am relishing this new addition to my powers!

For me, the most striking thing about the Kanyini film was the contrast between the excellent living conditions of the aboriginal people shown on some fantastic black and white footage taken in about 1930 (from which the picture on the top of this article is taken) and the conditions of deprivation that they live in today.  This was prior to their forced removal from their traditional lands and the introduction of the policy removing their children from their parent to be ‘educated’ thousands miles away.  The present policy adopted by the Australian toward the aboriginal community amount to what has been described in a recent online article aspassive genocide’.   If, having read the article, you feel moved to write to John Howard the Australian Prime Minister here is the link you need http://www.pm.gov.au/contact/index.cfm

Bob Randall, the wonderful aboriginal elder whose personal story is told in the film, came to our local class the following evening and I am very pleased to say that by donating the profits from the evening we raised £560 to help towards the cost of his trip to the UK to promote his film.  This sum was boosted by the presence of many of the participants from Ya’Acov’s Ritual Ongoing Group.  Congratulations to Jo Lathan for organising his trip here.

This week the class is being visited by a woman who is making a documentary on dance and spirituality for BBC regional radio.  We will let you know when this will be broadcast.

You should know that the Initiation  workshop is now full and there is now a waiting list.  If you want a place it is still worth your while applying as places do become available.

We do still have places on our other intensive workshops.  If you are interested in these click on the workshop name below and you will be taken though the workshop write-up on our website.
